General
Information
As of
our last census, Chillicothe Fire Department protects approximately
14,592 resident in an area of 576 square miles. We have both urban
and rural populations. (Pictured at right: Our mascot, Fire Pup.)
We are an all-paid / career fire department. Currently, we staff 22
career firefighters and 11 firefighter who are available on call. We
use a Berkley schedule consisting of 24- hour shifts. Most staff is
currently trained as Firefighter/Paramedics.
The U.S. Department of Homeland
Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded a $36,006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant to the Chillicothe Emergency
Services which is used for the purchase and use of fire protection gear.
Chillicothe Fire Department personnel have completed hazardous material or
"hazmat" technical classes. The fire department received about $120,000 in grants to cover the cost of the training, a truck, a specialized trailer and the equipment that would be used if a spill
occurs. The department took 40 hours of training from an instructor from the University of Missouri who set up situations the department could face in the future with hazardous
materials. Seventeen Chillicothe Fire Department members took part in the class as well as others from area departments.

City officials, fire and ambulance personnel as well as other dignitaries gathered south of the Chillicothe Fire Department on Monday, December 3, 2010, to officially break ground on a $2.17 million renovation and expansion project for the fire station. The
project was one of the last items on a list of projects that were to be completed with the use of a quarter-cent sales tax which voters passed in April 2003 for the fire department.
The remodeling project included heater replacement, installation of exhaust systems and roof insulation on the old and new building, multiple renovations to the existing building, and the construction of a two-story addition, which included a new bay area and expanded resting quarters and office space for firefighters and the department's administrative staff.
