Local Emergency Operations Plan

Our Mission

The primary mission of the Chillicothe Fire Department is to protect and enhance the quality of life of the citizens of Chillicothe and Livingston county. This is done using comprehensive programs of service which are directed toward public education, prevention and control of fire, rescue, hazardous material mitigation and the answering of calls regarding emergency medical situations.

We are committed to serving our community and county with professionalism, excellence, and devotion to duty. We always strive to maintain and improve the skills of all of our personnel.

Our Department

As of our last census, Chillicothe Fire Department protects approximately 14,592 resident in an area of 576 square miles. We have both urban and rural populations. Chillicothe is affectionately known as the "city in the country".

We are an all-paid / career fire department. Currently, we staff 23 career firefighters and 7 firefighters who are available on call. We use a Berkley schedule consisting of 24-hour shifts. Most staff are currently trained as Firefighter/Paramedics.

A horse-drawn hose wagon dating back to the 1800s. A fast-paced record-setting fire department horse team from the early 1900s. A chain-driven fire truck from the 1920s. Visions of the past come alive through the painting of Chillicothe's fourth mural on the west side of the emergency services building in Chillicothe. The mural features three panels - all depicting the by-gone days of Chillicothe's fire department. The mural is 81 feet wide and reaches 20 feet high in the center panel. The first panel features firefighters and two horses as well as fire hoses and other firefighting equipment from the late 1800s. The second panel includes the famous horse team of Dan and Joe, who were credited with holding a world record in the length of time it took them from the moment an alarm sounded to the moment they arrived at the fire. The third panel is a picture of Chillicothe's first fire truck which was a chain-driven model dating back to around 1920.

	1937 - Centennial celebration on the east side of the Chillicothe square. Shown are a team of Belgium horses used to pull fire equipment.
	1926 - New city hall containing the Chillicothe Fire Department was built on the foundation of the old building which was destroyed by fire in 1825. The cost of construction was $72, 997.
	2012 - The Chillicothe Fire Department held an open house of their new facilities on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The event showed off the newly constructed, added-on, and remodeled areas of the Chillicothe Fire Department headquarters. Completion of the remodeling was finished at the end of 2011.
